Sports Chop: 3-18-11

NBA:

The Portland Trail Blazers are making good use of their homestand by first off knocking off the Dallas Mavericks earlier in the week and last night totally crushing the Cleveland Cavs 111-70! Nobody played more than 33 minutes as LaMarcus drained 20 points and 11 boards in 29 minutes of floor time! They finish off their 3 game homestand Saturday night against the Sixers!

NFL:

San Diego Chargers linebacker Kevin Burnett delivered a verbal hit to NFL Commish Roger Goodell earlier this week, calling him a “blatant liar” in an interview. He ripped him when asked to respond to the commissioner’s e-mail to NFL season-ticket holders after the NFL Players Association filed to decertify as a union and the NFL owners locked out the players. “Goodell’s full of it. He’s a liar. You’re a blatant liar. ‘It’s our league, it’s we, we love the players, we want the league,’ but what have you done for the players? What have you done, in all honesty, to improve the game, besides fine guys, besides take money away from guys, besides change a game that you’ve never played? … He’s done nothing to improve the game,” Burnett said.

NCAA:

Big upsets in men’s hoops for March Madness! #5 Vandy got upset by #12 Richmond. #13 Morehead State beat #4 Louisville. #11 Gonzaga beat #6 St. John’s which in my opinion isn’t much of an upset, especially taking into consideration Mark Few’s tourney experience as a head coach!

MLB:

Ken Griffey Jr. issued a prepared statement when he suddenly retired from baseball last June, and never mentioned anything about it after that. Finally, at spring training with the Seattle Mariners, Griffey discussed his reasons for leaving the game and the way he did it, insisting it will be the only time he addresses it. So whatever you do, don’t ever bring it up again! Hahaha. “I just felt that it was more important for me to retire and instead of being a distraction, it no longer became the Seattle Mariners, it became, ‘When is Ken doing this? When is Ken doing that?’ and that’s something I didn’t want to have my teammates, who I truly cared about, having to answer these types of questions day in and day out,” Griffey said.
